9th Annual Cello Workshop  For Adults
July 26th to August 1st 2009
Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA

Limited Registrations:

Since our workshop is limited in size due to space and program requirements at Wilson College, we encourage early registration. While giving priority consideration to returning participants as much as possible until March 15th, we will also be attempting to balance our quartets and choir sections between the range of experienced players and beginners in order to provide the very best experience for everyone. It is our goal to offer the most rewarding and memorable challenges to everyone participating in this intensive cello week. With this in mind, we present two new matters in the registration process this year.

Select from Music Examples:

We are asking your help to more accurately group this year’s Cellospeak participants for their own comfort and success. It involves each applicant going to the registration web page to download the music examples that we have placed there. We ask that you select and practice the one most comfortable, but still challenging, between Cello 1 and Cello 5 and designate that one on your Registration Form. This exercise in self-evaluation will help us make sure of your correct placement, although changes can be made at the workshop if needed.

Off-Campus Housing Option:

Our 2009 Tuition Charge of $995.00 is inclusive of all classes, lessons, performances, etc. as well as all facilities, meals, and room accommodations. Most participants will be housed in single (or double if desired) dormitory rooms with shared bathrooms in the building above the dining hall. These rooms are conveniently located and are accessible by an elevator. There will also be rooms available for couples and faculty with more private bath arrangements in another dormitory building. Now in 2009, to those few participants who indicate on their Registration Form that they elect to stay off-campus in a hotel or motel rather than stay in the dormitory facilities, we will send full details and a list of nearby hotel options. These people will need to make their own arrangements, and will still be expected to take all meals and activities with the workshop at Wilson College. For off-campus accommodations, there will be a deduction of $75.00 (only) in the 2009 tuition, making it a total of $920.00.

OUR MISSION

It is our mission to provide opportunities for inspiring and enriching cello instruction for adults from all professions, backgrounds, and stages of life to come together in the Cellospeak Programs to share a love of music and the cello. These are opportunities for all those who desire to improve their playing by immersing themselves in the study of this noble instrument with like-minded individuals and accomplished cellists and to experience renewed interests, friendships, and a sense of social engagement and accomplishment.

It is a well-known fact that adults of all ages who are actively engaged in one of the intensive creative arts are happier, healthier, and significantly more able to delay the negative effects of aging. While that is true, the cello is perhaps the most ideal instrument to study – whether as a first-time activity or as a renewed interest from younger days – because of its magnificent sound and range of tone and expression, and because of its suitability to play in orchestras and all forms of chamber groups. To provide opportunities to play with others, learn from the experts, and expand musical and personal horizons is what Cellospeak is all about.

OUR HISTORY

Cellospeak was created in 2000 by the Artistic Director Dorothy Amarandos as a summer workshop for adult cello students yearning for an opportunity to play in ensembles. Our logo of 13 cellos in a circle represents the number of attendees at that first workshop. We have grown! The 2007 Workshop included over 60 participants of all ages and levels from as far away as Florida, Texas, Ohio, and Illinois. Cellospeak workshops include private lessons, technique and master classes, coached quartets, recitals by the esteemed faculty, and the “Cello Choir” playing all-cello multipart repertoire – including original compositions and and arrangements for Cellospeak – under the professional baton of conductor Gary Fitzgerald. Members of Cellospeak have performed on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and elsewhere. Testimonials reflect that Cellospeak provides a life-changing experience fulfilling a profound need to continue to grow and achieve while sharing the joy of the cello with others.

BENEFIT CONCERT

Cellospeak's first benefit concert was held on April 6th, 2008, at the Lyceum in Alexandria, VA. World-renowned cellist Stephen Framil performed to a full house, and the concert was a great success. You can view the concert poster here.
